Want to know what Heather's been up to this week? This blog pretty much covers it. Find entries by category here.

August Nightife

The myth that Paris is dead in August just doesn't want to die. And yes, there may be a few shops and offices closed, but if you're looking to have fun, there's no shortage of things to do. Especially after dark. This is the last week to enjoy Paris Plage and the open-air cinema at Parc de la Villette, but the clubs are still going strong. Here are just three sprinkled around Paris:

Fleche d'Or (102 bis, rue de Bagnolet, 20th) remains open all summer, with live indie rock bands and electro clubbing in the former train station. Free entry, 8pm-2am, restaurant until midnight. For the laid-back East Paris crowd.

Le Showcase (under the Pont Alexandre III, 8th) is one of the largest clubs, with Sous Le Pont soirées every Friday and Saturday night from 10pm, free entry until midnight, €10 after that (get there early, always huge lines). For the young bling bling crowd.

Chacha Club (47 rue Berger, 1st) is one of the newest Parisian hotspots, opened in July and packed every night since. Read the Naughty Paris review here. For the chic and sophisticated of all ages.

An Apple Store for the Louvre

Apple fanatics (yes, I'm talking about you, David) can't wait for the first "real" Apple Store to open in Paris. For the moment, only FNAC has Apple stores as part of their stores, but apparently this isn't enough. For years the shop was rumored to be opening on the Champs-Elysées, but according to this article in ifo Apple Store, Jasmine Khounnala, Apple’s Paris-based public relations manager, confirmed that a store will open in the Carrousel du Louvre.

As first reported by LaTribune.fr and explained by MacGeneration.com and MacPlus.net, Apple will occupy about 7,770 square-feet formerly occupied by the Lalique and Résonnance stores.
I'm a big fan of the Carrousel du Louvre, an underground shopping gallery connected to the Louvre Museum, because it's open seven days a week -- a rarity in Paris -- and is directly accessible from the metro (station "Palais-Royal-Musée-du-Louvre"). It also has a Virgin megastore, regional tourism office, restrooms, foodcourt, ATM machines, and direct entrance to the museum without waiting in line outside the Pyramid (handy when it's cold or raining). Of course, not being an owner of any Apple products, I probably won't be visiting the new store (opening "sometime in 2009") unless it's to pry David away for a hot chocolate break. ;)

Pool on the Seine Reopens

The Piscine Josephine Baker, the floating pool on the Seine at the foot of the Bibliothèque Nationale, just reopened for the season through September 4. You can swim, take aquagym classes, or just sunbathe on the vast wooden deck and watch the boats chug by on the river.

Swimming hours are 10am-10pm Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, 10am-midnight on Tuesday and Friday, and 10am-8pm Saturday-Sunday. Aquagym classes daily 9am-10am.

Entry is €5 for adults, €2.60 for kids. Don't forget your speedos, boys (no "shorts" allowed in the pool).
