Cailloux Italian Trattoria

A stylish Italian trattoria at the center of the Butte-aux-Cailles, probably the first "cool" place on the butte, now becoming more gentrified as people realize how easier it is to get to the top of this hill than the one in the 18th. ;)

I've been coming here for four years and I walk the dogs past on their daily stroll, so you could say it's one of my "local" restaurants. Wooden floors, neo-retro lamps and simple pale chocolate interior, a few tables on the sidewalk in summer. But more important -- real Italian cuisine! Fresh, tasty, served by a lovely staff. I almost always get the pasta with snow peas and bacon (I can't recall the name, it's the first thing on the menu), but today I tried the saffron and pumpkin risotto with mint. Very nice! Main dishes about €15.  Italian wines by the glass from €4.50.

Same owners as L'Altro in the 6th.

BTW, it's ALWAYS full for lunch and dinner, so be smart and reserve. Closed Sun-Mon.

The cast of Edward Scissorhands (on at the Chatelet til 2nd Nov 08) is staying nearby....great to see how many of the local eateries are recommended by you! Where is best for a late night glass of wine after the show?

Near Chatelet or near the Butte aux Cailles?

Either! Near the Chatelet would be great too...the setting can be lovely in the Marais or on the Islands. We also quite often head down to the 13th straight after the performance too...from 10.30 we're ready to sniff out somewhere nice...characterful, fun, civilised, good food, atmosphere, good wine...any or all of these things. Suggestions would be fantastic, thank you.

Wine bars around Chatelet are nice, Robe et Palais, or maybe Chez Denise at Les Halles, open late, great food, not expensive. Around the 13th, there is the Butte, of course, but also the area beween there and Mouffetard isn't bad.
